Rare Vintage Navaho Bisbee Lavender Pit Turquoise Squash Blossom Necklace
Rare vintage Bisbee Navaho Lavender Pit Turquoise Squash Blossom Necklace. This squash blossom necklace comes with the original appraisal dated June 10, 1974. I have included a photo of the store that I found on the web. The Jewel Box opened in May of 1949 and closed its doors in May of 2006. It was owned by Morris (Morrey) Reznik. He was well liked and was known as the Pawnfather. He passed away at age 89 in 2010. The original appraisal that you will receive was signed by Morreys wife whose name was Honeylou. The necklace is Navaho and is sterling silver. The turquoise is from the Bisbee mine which was founded in the mid 1870s. By the time it closed in 1975, it was considered to be the richest mine in the world. It produced copper, gold, silver and billions of pounds of lead and zinc. Along with the metals it produced Malichite, Azurite and of course Turquoise. In the 1950s a large deposit of turquoise was found in the Lavender Pit. Most of this turquoise was dumped with the rest of the mining waste. The story says that the miners would fill their empty lunchboxes with turquoise even though the mining companies prohibited the turquoise to be taken out by the miners due to liability issue. In the 1960s Bisbee Turquoise was considered the finest turquoise ever seen. In 1972 Robert Matthews obtained the only lease given anyone to work the debris from The Lavender Pit. The lease was for 2 years. He and his team recovered about 2000 pounds of excellent quality Bisbee Turquoise. The Bisbee Turquoise is very much sought after. Small amounts of turquoise still come out because Mine Robbers sneak into the mine under the cover of darkness to hunt for pieces of this fine mineral. Now to describe this wonderful necklace. The necklace measures 26 not including the Naja which measures 2.5 x 2.5. It weighs 240 grams. I have not cleaned the necklace. I will let you determine if you want the patina or if you want a more shiny look. Please see all the photos. There are markings on the back of the Naja. If you need more info, please ask. Extremely Rare High Grade Bisbee Turquoise Overlay Bolo Tie by Leonard Nez
This early Bolo by Navajo Artist Leonard Nez contains one of the finest and rarest High Grade Natural Bisbee Turquoise Cabochons. The Gem features two gorgeous swirls of Bisbee Blue color surrounded by the wonderful, rich, reddish-brown, chocolate color, matrix characteristic of the Lavender Pit Mine. One of the swirls is a beautiful plain blue with no matrix and the other swirl is termed “Smokey Bisbee”. “Smokey Bisbee” is exceedingly rare and highly sought after by collectors. Having these two kinds of swirls, completely surrounded by the the beautiful “Chocolate” Lavender Pit matrix puts this Cabochon in the rarest of rare categories. Lenard placed the gorgeous High Grade Natural Bisbee Cabochon in a perfect setting. The elegant setting emphasizes the beauty of the Cabochon without overpowering it. The outer edge of the setting has a smooth edge that surrounds the gorgeous combination of of large and small feathers. A second plain edge overlaps the heavy bottom plate then more perfectly cut feathers follow with one side highlighting an Aztec influenced design. A fine hand chiseled bezel holds the large, magnificent Bisbee Cabochon. The Bolo is finished with elegant hand made cylinder tips. One expert thought “This is one of the finest bolos that Leonard Nez has ever made”. I bought this Bolo new, have owned it many years, and agree. It’s one of the “best”!! Full length of the Bolo Cord, Tips included, approximately 44 inches. Bolo size approximately 2 9/16 by 2 5/16 inches. Bisbee Cabochon size approximately 1 7/16 inches by 1 1/8 inches. Provenance – Josh Chaney, Turquoise Direct. Please contact me if you have any questions. Old Pawn Bisbee squash blossom necklace with 18 rare smokey cabs. Final Reduction
Old Pawn Bisbee squash blossom with 18 rare smokey cabs. This is an incredibly hard to find example of Smokey Bisbee cabs mounted in a traditional style squash blossom. This piece would have been made during the Indian jewelry revival of the 60-70 period when shops in Gallup and Scottsdale were trying to keep up with the demand. It is not signed by any artist or shop, but there is no doubt that the cabs are smokey Bisbee. The pawn shop tag indicates 1960 but the other info is blanked out. Originaly from a closed shop in Clovis NM. I bought this a few years ago from Joe Tanner. The stones are a beautiful swirl of grey/black/lavender and range in size from approx. 10 x 12 to 25 x 12 mm. The necklace is 26 long which does. Include the Naja which is approx. 3 1/4″ long x 3″ wide. Weight is over 7.47 oz. Or 211.9 g. The necklace is comprised of 8 mm. From scrap, beads strung on fox tail chain with a hook and eye clasp. See my other listings. For more great items! Old Pawn Bisbee Squash Blossom necklace. Five blossoms per side. All cabs have “smoke” in them. Hand made beads from scrap. If you wish to use another method please ask first. Add to Favorite Sellers. A TRUE COLLECTORS PIECE One of a kind there will NEVER be another one like this! All Natural RARE VERY. Arizona Bisbee Turquoise Ring. This is classic smokey Bisbee with brilliant blue color. Upon closer inspection, one can see that the stone is rich in character, with an overlay of rusty red matrix, seemingly partially covering the deep blue deep within. Wow, look at this Natural Bisbee Ring. The large Natural Bisbee stone is brilliant sky blue with abundant reddish-brown matrix and sparkling white quartz crystals. The setting is surrounded with antiqued silver bead wire and framed by two silver shields hand stamped with a sun rising out of the clouds motif. The triple band has silver rope braid running down the center. What a treasure this Natural Bisbee ring is! Stone Size- 10×24 mm. Ring Size- 9.25. RARE HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE ARIZONA BISBEE TURQUOISE RING. This brilliant deep blue turquoise is one of the most expensive and rare. Bisbee has a reputation as a hard, finely webbed, strikingly brilliant blue stone of high quality. Bisbee matrix is brown to an unusual deep reddish brown which makes the stone easy to identify. The unusual matrix forms wisps or veils throughout the stone, which is often called smokey Bisbee. This turquoise is also unique in that it can be found as deep as 900 feet underground, while most turquoise is found at less than 100 feet. Bisbee is one of the more famous and one of the oldest known American mines. Bisbees main operation was the Lavender Bisbee Copper mine. The Bisbee turquoise mine has been closed since the 1960s. In 2004 the Phelps Dodge Mining Company no longer allowed anyone near the hazardous old mine and buried the turquoise pit. There will be no more Bisbee mined. Since the 60s people have jumped the fence and worked the tailings to sell. Any Bisbee on the market today was officially mined prior to 1970. Visits can be made once a year to search for rock at some of the dumps. Ruth Ann Begay was born in Phoenix, Arizona, but her family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where she grew up speaking only Navajo. Her father brought the family to Albuquerque and raise his children modernly instead of traditionally. She learned how to silversmith by watching her mother and her sister. Ruth Ann began silversmithing professionally after high school and started with simple bezels, and soldering then moving on to decorative work such as leaves. She is now married and has one daughter, Desbah. When asked why she didnt raise her daughter traditionally, she says, Why send them back when they can go forward. She has taught her daughter how to do silverwork but understands that Desbahs interest lies in electric work. Ruth Ann and her husband live in Prewitt, New Mexico. She says that New Mexico is her favorite place to be. Ruth Ann uses modern tools to make her jewelry. She taught herself how to finish silver jewelry. Ruth Ann says that when she signs her name to a piece, it is important that the quality of her work be something that she can be proud of. Ruth Ann thinks that teaching silver smithing sounds interesting. She says that the value of being an artist is that she can find jobs that allow her to be creative.
