Authentic Rare Chumash Incised Asymmetrical Spindle Charmstone – Bennett COA. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, Chapter 14. Artifact Classification Info: An Asymmetrical Spindle Charmstone, from the Chumash culture in Southern California. One end displays multiple grooves comprising of incised lines, that are not joined. This artifact has been in private collections. There are incised lines on one end of the charmstone which is interpreted as symbolizing lightning. This type of charmstone was said to be a thunderbolt and was usually found at the foot of a tree that had been struck by lightning (see appraisal description photo provided). The Chumash of Southern California would also use charmstones for shamanistic purposes in ceremonial context. Size: 6-5/16 inch x 1 inch. Material: Basalt (fine grained). Archaeological Charmstone Reference: Elsasser and Rhode, 1992. Provenance: Gallery acquisition, Ex. Britten Marin Collection, California. It is not marked/signed, as expected for age/medium. This baskwet has funery pole designs which were made to burn on each rung of the pole at the one year anniversary of someone’s death. A basket like this was placed on each and every run of the pole and then the entire pole was set afire thus it is VERY RARE to find one intact. Made of willow on a single willow rod coil foundation coiling counter clockwise wit hdevil’s claw design the basket is actually quite well woven wit happrox. Eight coils to the inch and approx. This is Rare Antique Native American Indian Forged Iron Axe/Hammer Tomahawk. The war club axe/hammer tomahawk features an exceptional hand-forged iron head. The forge seams are visible on both sides of the blade and the piece shows a truly fine high-quality craftsmanship. The head exhibits a fine rich deep patina evenly over the entire surface. The original haft is constructed from tiger maple wood and brass tacks. The entire surface of the wood shows a nice deep patina. Haft Length – 17.0 in. Blade – 5.75 in.
