This is a rare, authentic, and museum-worthy piece of Native American craftsmanship believed to have been made by the Western Apache between the 1920’s to 1940’s based on materials and craftmenship. A uniquely rare and authentic vintage Native American handmade basket, measuring an amazing 17″inches wide x 8″ tall, featuring original woven bark, natural vine wrapping, and an accent of genuine rabbit fur, approximately 6″ x 8 “. This large and tactile piece displays traditional handcrafting techniques likely associated with Plains or Southwestern tribes, using native materials such as plant fiber, bark, vine, and hide. The base and sides are made from coarsely stitched bark or palm fiber, secured with natural twine or root vine, and the rabbit fur patch suggests ceremonial or winter utility, possibly for food gathering, cradleboard insulation, or spiritual offering use. Handmade using natural, untreated native materials. Constructed with coiled plant fiber or bark. Bound with vine or root fiber cordage. Topped with original rabbit pelt/fur (now aged, but still intact). Beautiful organic textures with visible stitching. Possibly for food gathering, cradleboard insulation, or spiritual offering use. Very good condition for its age. Wear and aging to the fur and plant materials are consistent with age and natural use. For sale is a Native American bear grass dyed lidded basket. This basket is circa late 1800s – 1920s and the design depicts whirling logs. This is an ancient symbol that is found among many First Nations cultures around the world. It represents harmony, balance, the four directions and a symbol of the four seasons. The appropriation of the symbol by the nazis turned the meaning to one of hate and racism. As a result, many museums are reluctant to display these artifacts which is the reason a lot of these baskets were disposed of making them rare particularly in this condition: I was hesitant to have this item on my site for this reason. However, this piece is a collectors item and the native meaning has nothing to do with how the symbol was used in WWII. The basket is made from dyed bear grass with cedar bark around the edge that the lid fits onto. This basket incorporates the wrapped twines technique which is able to produce small, delicate, finely tuned work such as this example. There is a wonderful patina to this old basket. The measurements are 2 ” H X 3″ in diameter: the basket is in very good condition for age with expected wear. Great collectible example of an early Makah or Nuu-chah-nulth basket of this vintage and condition. Thank you for looking and please follow my store as new art is added often.
