Antique studio tintype of what appears to be a Native American Indian in traditional dress. Could be an unpublished image. Housed within original paper frame/sleeve mount measuring 2.5″ x 4″. Tintype is in poor condition with scattered soiling, creasing, and areas of paper loss throughout. Several large bend creases in tintype. Worthy of further research! This original tintype depicts an American Indian chief in full regalia with a woman. The woman is unidentified and the native American man is apparently one of the members of Buffalo Bills show. This photo was taken in around the 1910’s in the San Gabriel valley area of Los Angeles, CA. The blown up image is simply to show the detail of the original tin type which can be included in the listing if so desired. Marked in pencil on back: San Gabriel This would make a great addition to your rare photographs collection. MEASUREMENTS: Tintype measures 4.5″ long by 3.75″ wide and weighs 1oz. CONDITION In generally good condition considering age and use (please see all photographs as they form part of the listing description). Rare D. F. Barry Imperial Cabinet Photograph of Native American Chief John Grass
For your consideration is this truly exceptional imperial or oversized cabinet photograph that was copyrighted in 1890 by the photographer David Francis Barry. This is a well known photograph of Chief John Grass who was a leader of the Sihasapa (or Blackfoot) Sioux. He was born along the Grand River in South Dakota and became known as a leader of peace, at times resisting government efforts to take more land from the Sioux. This photograph is in EX to NM condition. Would be tough to find any better than this one. It measures an impressive 10″ by 6 3/4″. A rare size and image for the collector of Native American history.
