Old Pawn Zuni Sterling Silver and Turquoise Hair Pin. 4 1/4″ Long – 7/8″ Wide. One side has some dents. Most of these pawn shops and trading posts are now closed. The Native American would pawn his jewelry for immediate cash. The shop would hold it and charge interest until he could reclaim it. Dead pawn are the pieces that were never retrieved. Old Pawn Jewelry typically dates from the early 1900s to the 1970s. Most of the early pieces are not signed because it wasn’t the Native American tradition to sign the pieces they crafted. Also, the turquoise in old pawn is turquoise that you can’t get anymore because many of the mines have closed. Exceptional and beautiful handmade beaded and feathered Native American art piece. 22 Feathers (Feathers attached to staff with rawhide). Rawhide wrap in certain sections and trade cloth with brass studs set into it in addition to the exquisite beading. Large full size 6 feet high with wood hook staff and the end of the staff at the bottom of the stick/staff is 9-1/2 inches of dark colored wood with hanging quills attached with raw hide straps. Dangling pieces of tan leather strips and red and black trade cloth are hanging from the bells near the top of the staff. Very nice detail and craftsmanship and very nice condition for its age. This listing is for a vintage hair pin. I have not seen one like this one ever and I have a few. I was wondering how it worked until it used a hair sample on it. The pin is 4 12 long so you could get a lot of hair in there it has grooves in it to make it easy to put a little hair or a lot in the hair piece. You can see all the jibberish on the back there could be a signature in there but I doubt it. Most of these older pieces are not signed anyway. This was a super cool find. Kinda wanted to keep it but then need to sell unfortunately! You don’t have to have long hair to wear this. Or if you do, its great for a ponytail. I would venture to say this is 30’s era. By the 40’s and 50’s barrettes with clips came along. This is a great old hair ornament sure to be noticed! The oval part of this is stamped so pretty, it measures 3″ long and 1 1/2″ wide with very pretty stamp work. Great conversation piece too. The weight is with the pin 16 grms. So its a good sturdy piece. Nice for the collectors out there or someone who likes vintage Native American jewelry. It has been tested on the back to be sterling silver.
