VERY RARE 1st Ed. Book HISTORY of MN SETH EASTMAN Native AMERICAN INDIAN
VERY RARE 1st Ed. Book HISTORY of MN SETH EASTMAN Native AMERICAN INDIAN. Offering a Rate, 1st Edition, History of Minnesota from the Earliest French Explorations to the Present Time — by Edward Duffield Neill. Published in 1858 by. Lippincott Company — Philadelphia. Book is hard bound in green cloth cover with marbleized interior papers in front and back. Frontispiece portrait of Alexander Ramsey (MN first Governor). Portraits of other MN dignitaries included. Important because most of the engravings are by the famed artist Seth Eastman — illustrating activities of the American Indian in the region. Only the first 100 copies include these important and historical engraved plates by Eastman, and are not found in later editions of this book. These engravings (mounted proofs on Indian paper) are masterpieces– depicting different events in American Indian life at this time. This book was packed away for years and protected from sun and users. Wear commensurate with age and gentle use. The cover is in very good condition — minor bumping to corners and some wear to cover. Book spine remains intact (a tad loose in the back). The pages are tight. There are two minor tears on the bottom of the first two pages (less than 1 inch). For the most part, pages are very clean and crisp s. Ome minor spotting to a few pages — nothing distracting. Considering its age, this book is really in great condition. Measurements: 12 5/8″ long, 10 1/2″ wide and 2 1/4 thick. Rare and significant find. We wrap all our items very carefully. The item “VERY RARE 1st Ed. RARE 1812 History of Indian Wars in New England, Native American Cruelty, 1st ed
A History of the Indian Wars With the First Settlers of the United States. Particularly in New England. By Daniel Clark Sanders. Published: Wright and Sibley, Montpelier, VT, 1812. Full calf leather with gilt “Indian Wars” title on spine. Binding in nice condition, text is toned. The last page of text is only about 15% there, with the rest provided in facsimile (see pic). Previous owner signature and inscription on ffep and rear pastedown. A very rare Vermont Imprint and Indian War History title. A scarce work on the history of the Indian Wars in New England, written by the president of the University of Vermont. This book aroused bitter criticism because of its strictures on colonial bigotry and cruelty to the natives. The book was long believed to have been suppressed by its author because of his mortification at the attacks made on it by reviewers, and both Field and Church give long accounts of its supposed destruction. While there certainly were bitter reviews, and the work is quite rare, more modern bibliographers, notably Marcus McCorison in VERMONT IMPRINTS, have suggested that the suppression story may be exaggerated. Later writers have also praised the book as one of the best written histories of the Indian Wars of New England. Howes S84; Church 1306; Streeter sale 727; Field 1351; Sabin 76366; Gilman, p. 240; McCorison, Vermont Imprints, 1420; Pilling, Algonquian Languages, p. 441; Pilling, Proof-Sheets 3474.
