Description ——- Rare, signed by author and a low numbered, limited edition – self-published book by Lynn Johnson, assisted by Alan Kessler, entitled. NATIVE AMERICAN DOLLS OF THE SEMINOLES AND MICCOSUKEES. Expertise: This Lynn Johnson is a recognized authority on Seminole and Miccosukee material culture, specifically their unique palmetto and patchwork dolls. Background: She spent years researching the transition of these dolls from traditional tribal playthings to sought-after items for the Florida tourist trade c. The Book: Her 2008 book is considered a definitive guide for collectors because she meticulously documented the differences between “tourist” dolls and those made for internal tribal use, often citing specific makers and historical periods. Signed in ink, by Lynn Johnson and low numbered #67 of 1st 300. Well-illustrated with color photos. Scholarly work documenting the history, making, and characteristics of and dating of the dolls handmade by the Seminoles and Miccosukees, Native American Indians. Book includes over 130 color photographs of different dolls from museums, Native American art dealers, and private collectors. History, identification, dating and rarity. Spiral bound, laminated covers. 11″ x 9″, 81 pages. At time of listing, no copies are available for sale online, except for this one. Proudly presented today is this rare First Printing of “Sioux Indian Drawings”, published by Milwaukee Public Museum in 1961. Long out of print, this portfolio contains 34 plates taken from the Red Hawk Ledger Book. This incredible collection was in the possession of a Sioux warrior who survived the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890. In 1900, the collection was donated to the Milwaukee Public Museum, and in 1961, 36 plates were reproduced in a limited first edition printing. This portfolio is from that printing. Two of the plates are missing, Plate 2 and Plate 13, and the historical pamphlet that accompanies the prints is a reproduction of the original. The plates are in truly excellent condition without any issues whatsoever, and measure 12 inches by 15 and a quarter inches. The Red Hawk Ledger Book is arguably the best collection of Plains Indian Ledger Art in existence, and this portfolio is an historically important representation of that record. They have been carefully stored since that time, and never displayed. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire such a desirable collection. This is a great historical printing, so don’t miss out!
