Rare Lakota Sioux Indian Pipe Tomahawk Very Old Forged Head Gun Barrel Bowl
Nice old Lakota Sioux pipe tomahawk with original haft and head. The head is forged and very old. Very well taken care of! The surface of the head still retains much of its original luster. The bowl has an octagonal opening and rifling inside, originating from an old gun barrel. This is a classical example of mid 1700’s blacksmith technique. The bowl is applied to the eye. The old ash haft is decorated with very old brass tacks and prolific file brandings. The haft has been carved into a hexagon shape, faceted. The haft is a work of art, museum quality. Excellent condition over all. The head measuring 7.25 inches long, the haft measuring 17 inches long. Send me your offers. From a relative’s advanced collection. 19th Century Brass Tomahawk with Pewter Inlays Human Figure Thunderbird RARE
BRASS TRADE PIPE TOMAHAWK, brass head with pipe poll, handle inlaid with pewter, the decoration featuring a Thunderbird, a standing figure, a sun circle, double arrows, double cross, crossed arrows, and geometric designs. It is a rare gem. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to own a beautiful and exceptionally unique piece of American history. 8″ L head, 15 1/4″. Fourth quarter 19th century. Excellent condition overall, pewter inlay with some likely early solder repairs, losses to mouthpiece likely from use. Private collection of Wallace Gusler, Williamsburg, VA. Gusler, This appears to be a commercial example of the type marketed to the Native population. The pewter inlay work was possibly executed by a Native American. The designs in the handle area of the tomahawk show Southwest Indian style – a thunderbird and a standing man, both executed with straight lines and corners, a style derived from weaving. There is also a sun circle at the end of the grip area, moving toward the head on each side. Double arrows, a double cross, and crossed arrows, and other geometric details are between the grip area and the head. In some areas solder repairs have been made, very easy to spot because of their lighter silver color. These appear to have been done during the period of active use. The integral mouthpiece has been broken off and shows good age, showing damage sustained a long time ago. I always provide tracking information for buyers to track their investments. I do my best to pack items expeditiously and with care because I believe prompt and safe deliveries are appreciated. I try to respond promptly to messages so I can and will assist along the way. Early Rare Crow Indian Pipe Tomahawk Forged Spontoon Head Gun Barrel Bowl 1780
The pipe tomahawk is in excellent condition with no repairs or damage. Spontoon style head patterned after the pike heads of the Spanish Conquistadors and explorers. Nice head forged from the barrel of a gun. Octagonal barrel and rifling inside. Looking closely, you will see the seam where the hardened bit was forged in to the shoulder of the tomahawk, commonly called a lap weld or lap seam. A good sign of authenticity and age. Walnut wood haft is original to the head. The brass tacks are original old square shank tacks. All along the haft are many ceremonial file branding marks made by placing a file or rasp in the fire until it was bright red and then burning the file into the haft. This was done for aesthetic “looks” and ceremonial purposes. There is a drilled hole for attaching drops or beads. The head is ever so slightly loose, the result of the wood drying and shrinking over the course of 170 years. A hide or leather gasket is seen between the eye and head. VERY NICE patina all over, really shows its age! The unusual style head is very desirable. Conservatively dated to 1780 but may be earlier. The haft of the tomahawk is measuring 21.5″ long and the head is measuring about 8.5″ long. Please ask any questions you may have. Thank you so much for looking! It came from Texas. It is a rare find nowadays. Of note, the antique wooden handle have some age cracks but it is still solid. Impressive spontoon tomahawk: NO COPY. I bought it in March 2006 (13 years ago). I just found the paper stating it is from the Lipan Apaches. See meter for the spontoon’s size (expressed in centimeters). Parallel with a spike published in “American Indian Tomahawks, “. Peterson (#74) see photo of plate. Description: Symetrically flaring blade. The eye is a pointed elipse. The ears are symetrical. Note: I do not know if this listed example was found in Connecticut. Further details: The surface of the metal is nicely patinated with minimal. Several wear marks do occur in the surface of the metal. There is no re-sharpening of the bit. The edge has one or two spots of. Roughness which does not distract from its appearance. The poll is octagonally chamfered. The haft is very old. The tightening shims in the eye reflect great age. I do not know. How far back the haft goes, but it could be original. There are three very small holes. In the haft which. Appear to have been drilled in modern. Times to use for attaching something. A prior owner fancied it up with a beaded drop, but that it was removed. I’ve had it in my collection. For years and don’t know. MEASURES: bottom of haft to top of bit: 12 3/4 inches. End of poll to edge of bit: 5 inches. Bit: 3 1/8 inches. Poll: 1 3/8 inches. The distinction between a “poll hatchet” and a poll tomahawk is often a matter of debate. I have nothing against poll hatchets and have a fine example of one currently listed. But here’s what makes this a tomahawk, and primarily a weapon of Native Americans. (not British or French soldiers). The military French and British Tomahawk styles. Are pretty well known because they were made in large numbers. This is not like any of theirs. Which had shorter polls, more efficient for hammering nails, and tended to have their top. Edge form a straight line front to back, for ease in lathing strips of wood. I may ask for a mutually agreed. The item “AUTHENTIC Ca. 1750 NATIVE AMERICAN FINE POLL TOMAHAWK/ EARLY HAFT. RARE STYLE” is in sale since Thursday, November 21, 2019. Very Rare Antique (massive) Sioux Tomahawk, 18th to 19th century Indian Wars
It is massive with 1.08 kg, a characteristic of the very early tomahawks. The metal head/blade was made by the white blacksmiths (interestingly, the logo on blade looks like “Morning Star”, which is very famous to the Indians), and traded to the Indians either directly or via specialized companies (such as the “American Fur Trade Company”). The tribe of tomahawk should be Sioux (according to its origin when acquired and its adornment). It is a rare find nowadays as it is a very early tomahawk decorated with antique red porcupine quills, and a couple of brass tacks and tin cones. Of note, the antique wooden handle (crude cut from tree branch) appears to have some remains of red/redish color, suggesting it had been tinted in red (with pigments) at one time. All is original and antique on this particularly impressive tomahawk. Size (metal head/blade): 7.48 inches. Overall length of tomahawk: 20.47 inches. Weight of tomahawk: 1.08 kg!
