Certified Rare Large Southern California Pendant. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, Chapter 14. There are a few interpretations that it may be for ornamental, ceremonial and/or utilitarian purposes (a weight). Nterpretations that this may have been repurposed from an ancient steatite bowl. It is large and weighs 7oz (190grams). A great artifact from Southern California. Provenance: Gallery acquisition, Ex. Britten Marin Collection, California. Britten Marin was the son of John Marin (original founder of Sports Illustrated Magazine). John Marin passed away May 31, 2011. Location found: Southern California in the early 1900’s. Pendant exhibits intentional engravings (simplistic horizontal and diagonal incised lines on both sides). One side flat, one side convex (gives a curved appearance). Fully in-tact, no repairs. Some surface abrasions, a small 1/8th inch nick is observed on the flat side. Size: 4-5/16 inch long x 2-1/16 inch wide x 13/16 inch thick (measurements taken at longest length, width and thickness). Authentic Rare Chumash Incised Asymmetrical Spindle Charmstone – Bennett COA. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, Chapter 14. Artifact Classification Info: An Asymmetrical Spindle Charmstone, from the Chumash culture in Southern California. One end displays multiple grooves comprising of incised lines, that are not joined. This artifact has been in private collections. There are incised lines on one end of the charmstone which is interpreted as symbolizing lightning. This type of charmstone was said to be a thunderbolt and was usually found at the foot of a tree that had been struck by lightning (see appraisal description photo provided). The Chumash of Southern California would also use charmstones for shamanistic purposes in ceremonial context. Size: 6-5/16 inch x 1 inch. Material: Basalt (fine grained). Extremely Rare Double Sided Incised (Engraved) Stone Tablet Fragment, Malaga Cove California – COA. The incredible archaeological interpretation of the rare artifact engravings are related to astrological events; with additional interpretation that the Chumash used these objects to observe the solstices. These types of artifacts are known as “portable cosmos” which refer to the universe and are small enough to be carried versus large stone petroglyphs that are permanent structures. This artifact was part of a 1920’s private collection found at Malaga Cove California, prior to Archaeological excavation, of what is now known as archaeological site CA-LAN-138. This is a rare artifact from an early discovery of this site. (1) Double Sided Incised (Engraved) Stone Tablet Fragment, Guaranteed 100% Authentic. Engravings appear on both sides of the stone. Approximately 1,400 years old. This artifact is fragile, siltstone is a very light-weight stone type. Size: Small, Approximately 2-7/16 inch long x 1-2/16 inch wide. Attributed to Chumash Culture. Extremely Rare Certified Chumash Double Sided Engraved Ceremonial Stone Tablet, California – COA. This tablet has been attributed to ceremonial context, which is a rare recovery. An extremely rare & significant artifact (view archaeological info below) from Archaeological Site CA-LAN-138, Malaga Cove California, Chumash Culture. Provenance: Ex Byron Anderson Collection, Ex Racer Collection. (1) Double Sided Incised (Engraved) Chumash Ceremonial Steatite Tablet, Guaranteed 100% Authentic. Approximately 1,000-1,500 years old. Cross-hatch/square engravings, finely engraved, appear on both sides of the tablet. Material: light grayish steatite stone. Size: 8-3/4 inch long x 6-1/8 inch wide. Fully in tact, no restoration, there are a few scratches observed on the item. Please view all large high definition pictures and video for all details. Intentional horizontal parallel incised lines extend all the way across the tablet and cover 2/3 of the tablet. Intentional parallel diagonal lines intersect the horizontal lines which generates a crosshatch pattern. The partially drilled hole is 3/8 inch diameter. View video below for details. Intentional incised engravings are contained to a small portion of Side 2, center edge of tablet. The incised lines are intentional parallel horizontal lines that do not extend to the edge, with intentional parallel diagonal lines intersecting the horizontal lines creating a crosshatch pattern. This is a rare artifact found at Level 3 of the site. (1) Certified California Birdstone Guaranteed 100% Authentic. No restoration, fully in tact – a few knicks and surface abrasions exist (see pictures) that appear to be from after excavation. Provenance: This artifact was part of the famous Byron Anderson collection. Material: Glossy Green/Black Steatite (also known as soapstone). Heavily incised intentional striations (s teatite was used for many artifacts for its ability to retain heat without fracturing, and softness so it could be easily carved, scraped and grounded; sculpted into any shape or form). Size: 3-1/2 inch long x 2 inch wide. Approximately 1,400 years old. This type of California Birdstone does not stand on its base.
