Rare Seneca (Seneka) Native American Daguerreotype Portrait 1/6th Plate
We have had this daguerreotype in our collection for over 50 years. It was a mystery to us until recently. The sitter looked to be a Native American and we could not read the pencil inscription on the back. So, we showed it to an anthropologist who immediately recognized the inscription to read Seneka which is another spelling for Seneca. So, we think this a portrait of a Seneca Indian. The Seneca People live in the Lake Ontario area. Please note, this dag is not a strong image. It is light and a hard to see unless you hold it in just the right way. It is not sealed and shows some light wear. A 1/6 th plate, it is housed in the typical dag gold frame and mat and housed in a half vase and not a full case. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions. Please take a close look at our photos. Feedback : Your satisfaction is our highest priority. If there’s a problem, please get in touch with us BEFORE you post feedback, so that we can work it out. We strive for 5 star service. Thanks for leaving us 5 Stars! Rates vary and are determined by the package, distance, carrier, and service.

This Native American stone was used to start fires. They would insert the stick into one of the holes on the rock, take their bow, wind the string around the stick, and work it back and forth until friction created and created a spark between the rock and the tinder. This rock is a rare find found in South Dakota’s fields. I got it from a state sale in Newell, SD, and the gentleman said that he had picked it up on one of his father’s fields. It is an incredibly rare find and would have been carried by Native Americans all throughout the plains.
