This is one of the finest CARICO LAKE Turquoise I have ever owned. The fabulous stone took millions of years to form just under the right conditions to be formed by “mother earth”. The massive sterling silver bezel holding the turquoise slab is “scalloped” in design with hand stamping, straight edge bezel with twisted roping all around the perimeter; original patina to the silver; which is preferred by collectors. This big boy cuff weighs a whopping 177.1 grams about 6.25 oz; The piece contains Leroy Dayea Hallmark on the Back Center Terminal. This is a very hard glossy polished “gemstone”; with honey and brown water web matrix; various pools of light to deep greens in color; with water webbed lightning rod designed natural matrix. The stone is a hard natural gem appearing completely untreated. SO GRAND IN PERSON. HARD TO CAPTURE THE TRUE BEAUTY OF THIS BRACELET WITH A CAMERA. Over the years I have only collected Native American Jewelry based on the value, grade, and rarity of the piece, preferring jewelry with unique character, along with great craftsmanship. In other words, jewelry that is not only beautiful, but a great investment, and of historical value. As collectors of old pawn natural turquoise jewelry are discovering, it is becoming more difficult to acquire jewelry of this size and workmanship. Most of the turquoise mines are now depleted and closed and less and less fine quality old pawn turquoise jewelry is coming to the open market; except through old stock and personal collections. OBITUARIES GIVING SOME HISTORY WITH REGARD TO NAVAJO LEROY DAYEA’S ADOPTIVE PARENTS, “ATKINSON TRADING” PIONEERS— WILMERINE AND LEROY ATKINSON ATKINSON, Wilmerine, 79, b. 1997; 79yrs old, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died Wednesday, February 5, 1997 in Albuquerque. Wilmerine and Leroy knew they had found the love of their life when they were just kids during the Depression in Alvarado and Grandview, Texas. They married at 17 and 19 and moved with her family to New Mexico. Together they learned the trading post business and Indian Arts and culture. Leroy spoke fluent Navajo. Wilmerine worked by his side, bore four children and adopted Leroy Dayea, a Navajo child. They moved to Tucson in the 50’s and ran Indian art stores. They are together again. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to a charity of choice. ATKINSON, Leroy Bozo’, 78, b. 1915-d 1994; a resident of Albuquerque, NM, died Saturday, September 24, 1994. He was born November 15, 1915 on his father’s farm near Grandview, Texas. Leroy was a high school football star when he met Wilmerine Bollin. They were married in 1935. Leroy and Wilmerine started out in Gallup, NM where he began to learn the business of trading with the Navajo Indians. After working for other Indian traders he determined it was time to go into business for himself. Box Canyon Trading Post was the beginning of a career that lasted 47 years. An interview and photo was placed in the Route 66 Book noting Leroy for the quality and finish of the Navajo jewelry he had produced. He was interviewed in Life Magazine and the New Mexico Magazine. Leroy was a member of the AIAA Elks. He was highly respected for his abilities, integrity and his willingness to always help others. Leroy loved to chew on large cigars, but to his friends amazement the cigar was never lit. His counsel, love, caring and generosity will always be remembered by those fortunate enough to have known him. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Wilmerine Atkinson of Albuquerque; daughter, Tyler Atkinson of Santa Fe; sons, Joe (Jeanelle) Atkinson of Durango, CO and Lynn (Donna) Atkinson of Tucson; adopted son, Leroy Dayea b. Dayea, Spouse of Gallup, NM; grandchildren, Suzanna Bennett Dayea, Eric and Jona Bonecutter, Josh, Shauna, Tracey, Erin, Katie and Kerri Atkinson; one great-grandchild; brother, Herman Atkinson of Scottsdale, AZ; sister, Anna Mae Panos of Tucson. Funeral Service 2:00 p. Thursday, September 29 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Jon Lerley officiating, with interment to follow at TMP, East Lawn. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc. Box 13423, Tucson, AZ 85705 The Box Canyon Trading Post was one mile east of the state line in New Mexico. It was built by Leroy Atkinson in 1943 and he ran it for a decade until US Highway 66 was widened, which impacted the commercial viability of the property. The building itself seems fairly modern with big plate glass windows along the front, the requisite Indian drawings, and even the gas pumps seem fairly modern too. But the maroon Chevron gasoline style sign and the streamlined automobile seem to indicate the decade of the 1950s.
