Estate Find Native American Slate Pendant/ Butterfly Gorget/bannerstone Rare

ESTATE FIND NATIVE AMERICAN SLATE PENDANT/ BUTTERFLY GORGET/BANNERSTONE. This piece is in amazing condition. Such a beautiful piece of artwork. I sure wish I knew what they used these for hundreds of years ago. Size is 6 3/4″ wide x 2 5/8 tall with the inside of the wings being 3 3/4″ apart and the holes are about 1 3/4 apart in the middle. The thickest part of the middle is about 7/8 thick. The previous owner “now deceased” collected points from fields and streams throughout South Central Indiana for over 70 years. Some points in his collection were acquired from the Indianapolis Childrens Museum, and the Eiteljorg Museum when they periodically deacessioned pieces from their collections. Zuni HOWARD LEEKELA Sterling Silver and Gemstone Inlay Butterfly Rings. Mother of Pearl and Turquoise Polka-Dot Inlay Sterling Silver Butterfly Ring-Size 7.5. Face measures: 1″x1″ Weight: 6 grams. Circa 1930’s to 1940’s. Howard Leekela created these rings and was a skillful top notch silversmith. Howard Leekela was born on July 1, 1915 and died on November 15, 1987 at the age of 72. Howard last resided in Zuni, McKinley County, New Mexico. In the book “Indian Silver” by Margery Bedinger, Howard was mentioned as a proficient stone-cutter of three dimensional forms. RARE VINTAGE NAVAJO BUTTERFLY MAIDEN KACHINA with STAND NATIVE AMERICAN

RARE VINTAGE NAVAJO BUTTERFLY MAIDEN KACHINA w/ STAND NATIVE AMERICAN. This is a very rare find. This is an antique Navajo kachina hand-carved out of a cottonwood representing the Butterfly Maiden of the Hopi Culture. This kachina has been verbally dated to around the 1930s by Mark Bahti of Bahti Indian Arts of Tucson and Santa Fe, paperwork will be included. The paperwork from Mark Bahti constitutes a professional analysis of the kachina, tribe and materials. This rare kachina falls into the Navajo folk art category. That being said, it is an incredible piece. This antique Native American, Butterfly Maiden kachina stands 12-1/4″ tall in the stand, 9-1/4″ wide across the her tablita (headdress) and approximately 4-1/4 wide across the body. This kachina has a lot of wear to it. This unique kachina was carved out of a cottonwood limb, it is incredibly thick and sturdy. One of the crosses on her tablita is broken off. She has stains, some splits in the wood, scratches and a lot of rub to it, but in spite of that, it is in remarkably good condition for a kachina that is nearly 100 years old. Bahti states he feels she was painted with an old style of poster paint. She was originally designed to be hung by the neck as traditional Hopi kachinas are, but I have included a stand for your convenience. It can be displayed either way. This rare kachina would be an outstanding addition to any Western or Native American collection! Don’t forget to take a look at our other sales for more unique items.
