This intricately woven Hupa hat basket is a stunning example of Native American craftsmanship and is very rare due to its fragility. The unique design and use of natural materials showcase the skill and artistry of the unknown artisan who created it. The basket originates from the United States and is a beautiful representation of the Hupa tribal affiliation. It has a rich history, although the ownership is not available. The handmade basket is a one-of-a-kind piece and has not been modified. This basket is an exquisite addition to any collection and is sure to be a conversation starter. This old, fragile fez-shaped cap is referred to as a Clallem woven hat basket. Due to their fragile state and age many perished. They are considered rare and hard to find. Where it should not be worn, it measures 7″ diameter x 4″ height with a total of 22.5 circumference.
Here is another amazing basket with incredibly tight twining, uniform in each tiny weave. It measures 3-3/4 inches tall and is 3 inches wide. It has a short, small pedestal woven into the pot, but, at only 1-38 inches in diameter, it is not wide enough for the cup to stand with the lid on, although it might when full. It has a lid with a woven in finial or double knob like handle on top. It reminds me of an Acorn. The only decoration is some thin black lines and dashes on the body and lid, and some tiny red dots on the body. The basket has a beautiful patina, evident when you see how much lighter it is where the rim of the lid covered the top edge. I believe this to be from the 1930s or 40s.
