RARE Native American Coast Salish Scallop Shell Zwizwi Dance Rattle







This rare shell rattle is from Clayoquot in the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) territory on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. It is made of very large shells from a scallop species locally called Weathervanes, Pacific, or Pecten. This rattle was used as part of a powerful ceremonial dance called the. The right to perform this dance was passed from Coast Salish people of Comox to the Kwakwa_ka_’wakw and Nuu-chah-nulth through marriage. A fine and rare example, this rattle is in superb condition with wrappings bright and intact, and original paint on end scallop nearly 100%. The shells are large: 6.5-7″ across, and fabric wrapped wood ring is 9.5″ across. Please see all photos.
