This VERY RARE Collectible Benson Yazzie Navajo Sterling Concho Belt with Turquoise Cabochons could be an excellent addition to your wardrobe! Used more for style than for the purpose of keeping ones pants stationary on the hips, these belts are quintessential of the Southwest Style. It has Sixteen (16) conches (including buckle). The larger conches measure 2 1/2″ L x 2″ and the butterfly conches measure 1″ W x 1 7/8″ L. The belt buckle measuring 3″ L x 2 1/4″ W. The full length of the belt measures 40 3/4 (there are no holes in the leather). Each conch features a hand tooled pattern. The intricate tooling on the conches increases this belt’s versatility and value. This pattern is enclosed by a scalloped edge. In 1976, Native Americans of the Southwest began to export purple spiny oyster shells for jewelry making, popularizing their use abroad. RARE 1930s ERA ANTIQUE NAVAJO MONGWA KACHINA with STAND LARGE NATIVE AMERICAN
RARE 1930s ERA ANTIQUE NAVAJO MONGWA KACHINA w/ STAND LARGE NATIVE AMERICAN. This is a very rare find. This is an antique Navajo kachina hand-carved out of cottonwood representing the Great Horned Owl Kachina, Mongwa. This kachina has been dated to around the 1930s by Mark Bahti of Bahti Indian Arts of Tucson and Santa Fe, paperwork will be included. The paperwork from Mark Bahti constitutes a professional analysis of the kachina, tribe and materials. This rare kachina falls into the Navajo folk art category. That being said, it is an incredible piece. This antique Native American, Mongwa kachina stands approximately 10-1/2″ tall in the stand, approximately 9-3/4″ tall out of the stand, approximately 4″ wide across the body, 7″ wide across the carved wings at the top of the head. The body of this kachina is approximately 3 deep at the one complete arm. One of the arms is missing. Also, the nose and arm have been repaired and glued back together. Bahti feels it was painted with an old style of poster paint. This kachina has a few stains, some splits in the wood, scratches and some rub to it, but in spite of that, it is in remarkably good condition for a kachina that is nearly 100 years old. It is wearing a woven wool skirt, some type of woolen yarn for a sash around its waist, a suede cape, some sort of dyed string around its neck for a ruff and some very old feathers wrapped together for a headdress. It was originally designed to be hung by the neck as traditional Hopi kachinas are, but I have included a stand for your convenience. It can be displayed either way. This rare kachina would be an outstanding addition to any Western or Native American collection! Don’t forget to take a look at our other sales for more unique items.
