Rare Matched Pair Massachusetts State Shield Emblem Door Knobs Native American
Wonderful matched pair of door knobs with the Massachusetts State Seal. These do not come to market very often and with the hardware is even rarer. The door knob is oval and measures about 3 1/4″ tall and 2 3/8″ wide. They are in very good condition – original patina- not polished. This door knob has comes with some Massachusetts history. It has a raised State seal on it. The seal was adopted by the Provincial Congress in 1780. The shield has an Algonquian Native American with a bow and arrow, the arrow is pointing down, which signifies peace. There is a star next to the figure’s head with five points. Above the shield is the state military crest which is a bent arm holding a sword, which is facing up. This was meant to remind people that it was through the American Revolution that independence was won. Under the seal is a ribbon with the words “Ense petit placidas sub libertate quietem”, this means “With a sword, she seeks quiet peace under liberty”. There has been some talk of redoing the state seal to be more compassionate towards the Native Americans.
