Vintage Nunivak Island Yupik Bird Mask Alaska Rare Similar Past Auctions $18K
Vintage pre-mid 20th century Nunivak Island Yupik Bird Mask, probably Circa 1920s. The long winged pieces have been restored and re-dowelled and are in very fragile condition. There is one side where the hole in the mask has widened with age and has lost some of the original wood, so its in a state that needs some TLC. The original pigmented polychromed paint is in excellent condition and has been cleaned with mink oil to preserve the finish. Piece feels almost like its made of salty driftwood, but probably yellow cedar. This is a large mask and will look very nice hung on any wall or in any high end collection. The top of the head to the bottom of the spotted tail is 17 inches. From wingtip to wingtip is nearly 30 inches. Came out of an estate out of The Seattle area many years ago.
