This museum-quality gorget is a fine-grained sandstone breastplate symbolizing rank or authority and worn at the breast by suspension from the neck; it is usually rectangular or ovoid, flat and two-holed so that it will hang horizontally. The artisan who carved this large and extremely rare quadrilateral, five-hole gorget evidently intended to create a truly unique symbol; there are four evenly-spaced drilled perforations of equal size, a fifth, much larger medial perforation and all edges have been rounded. 5″ x 3.25″ x. 5 and in excellent condition. This vintage Navajo necklace was hand crafted by well known silversmith Frank Yellowhorse (2/14/33-8/13/2020). The pendant measures approximately 2.5″ wide and 2″ high and is suspended from a large sterling bale. The detail of inlay in this piece is simply amazing. Yellowhorse utilized turquoise, malachite, jet, orange and purple spiny oyster. The pendant is stamped Frank Yellowhorse, Navajo, sterling and with an imprint of his signature horse. The pendant weight is 37.7 grams total.
