Children, drag up a rock, because this is quite a tale. More on that later. When you hear about them, you may want to. Here are a few things you should look up in Wikipedia: Calico Hills early man site, and Ruth de Ette Simpson. Again, more on these. In the early 1960s, the great Louis Leakey, paleoanthropologist who was first to discover a true prehistoric human ancestor, was finishing out his professional life at UC at Riverside, with a student helper named Dee Dee Simpson. Professor Leakey caused a. Furor when he claimed that the stone tools that he had found in the Calico Hills of the Mojave desert were perhaps as old as 60,000 years. The lake manix tools have been controversially dated at 12-19,000 bc, which, until very recently, was considered to be ridiculous. Everyone knew that the clovis people were the first people in north america, but now they have found footprint evidence in White Sands national Park that there were humans there as early as 22,000 BC. Suddenly, the idea that Lake Manix tools might be pre-Clovis, as they have always been claimed to be, sounds more probable. Bob, the teenager given the tools, took them to the San Bernardino County archeologist: Dr. Ruth De Ette Simpson (aka Dee Dee), who told him that these were identical to the controversial Leakey discoveries. Look at these things! God lord, they are WAY more primitive than any Amerindian tool in current collecting circulation and clearly designed to process heavy duty meat. And notice the orange back of the stone, proof of theyre being a set. ANCESTRAL PASSIONS: the Leakey Family and the quest for humankind’s beginnings, “Misadventure at Calico, ” pp 358-371. Are these as old as Leakey assumed? Likely no, but could they be pre-clovis? Are they an early archaic toolkit clearly created for meat processing on a large scale basis, in late Pleistocene times?

Bracelet length: 6 1/4 END TO END; OPEN GAP 1 1/8″ = 7 3/8 Inches; Bracelet width: 3 1/4 Inches Across the Face; 2.5″high at Face. Materials: Sterling Silver, RARE GEM GRADE CARICO LAKE TURQUOISE. Gemstone: Rare GEM GRADE CARICO LAKE TURQUOISE W/ HONEY MATRIX. COLLECTOR QUALITY; INVESTMENT QUALITY; Important Gigantic Museum Quality Navajo LEROY DAYEA Gem Grade CARICO LAKE TURQUOISE Slab Ceremonial Cuff Bracelet with VERY RARE GEM GRADE CARICO LAKE WATERWEB TURQUOISE WITH HONEY COLORED LIGHTNING ROD MATRIX DESIGNS in the Stone; The scalloped and stamped bezel showcases the incredible turquoise and incredible silverwork throughout the piece is breathtaking workmanship. The cuff has five heavy gauge sterling silver terminals with two terminals consisting of thick twisted sterling; and the terminals are overlaid vertically with an array of intricate raised silver motifs as shown in the pictures including shell buttons, stamped sunburst designs, raindrops, twisted rope, raised hollow tubular motifs, scalloped bezels, and more; and the Cuff also has an inset above the turquoise slab; heavy Gauge Sterling Silver and Turquoise Piece from my personal 40+ years of collecting. 1.5″ x 1.5″ x. 5″Deep at the widest points; the cuff band graduates from 2.5″W to. 75″W at the ends and is rigid and presently Wrist Size 7 3/8″ wrist (actual measurements 6 1/4″ interior end to end with 1 1/8″ open gap= 7 3/8 Wrist Size); the heavy gauge band is rigid. This treasure has a Center Setting Height of around 2.5 and measures c. 3 1/4W left to right across the front face to the edges of the silver terminals on each side. The bracelet contains a Massive Gem Grade CARICO LAKE TURQUOISE Slab with Water webbed Matrix which is Honey Brown in color; the stone measures c. 1.5″H x 1.5″w at the widest point x c. This is one of the finest CARICO LAKE Turquoise I have ever owned. The fabulous stone took millions of years to form just under the right conditions to be formed by “mother earth”. The massive sterling silver bezel holding the turquoise slab is “scalloped” in design with hand stamping, straight edge bezel with twisted roping all around the perimeter; original patina to the silver; which is preferred by collectors. This big boy cuff weighs a whopping 177.1 grams about 6.25 oz; The piece contains Leroy Dayea Hallmark on the Back Center Terminal. This is a very hard glossy polished “gemstone”; with honey and brown water web matrix; various pools of light to deep greens in color; with water webbed lightning rod designed natural matrix. The stone is a hard natural gem appearing completely untreated. SO GRAND IN PERSON. HARD TO CAPTURE THE TRUE BEAUTY OF THIS BRACELET WITH A CAMERA. Over the years I have only collected Native American Jewelry based on the value, grade, and rarity of the piece, preferring jewelry with unique character, along with great craftsmanship. In other words, jewelry that is not only beautiful, but a great investment, and of historical value. As collectors of old pawn natural turquoise jewelry are discovering, it is becoming more difficult to acquire jewelry of this size and workmanship. Most of the turquoise mines are now depleted and closed and less and less fine quality old pawn turquoise jewelry is coming to the open market; except through old stock and personal collections. OBITUARIES GIVING SOME HISTORY WITH REGARD TO NAVAJO LEROY DAYEA’S ADOPTIVE PARENTS, “ATKINSON TRADING” PIONEERS— WILMERINE AND LEROY ATKINSON ATKINSON, Wilmerine, 79, b. 1997; 79yrs old, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died Wednesday, February 5, 1997 in Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy. She is survived by her children, Tyler Nancy Atkinson, Joe Atkinson, Lynn Atkinson, Leroy Dayea; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Wilmerine and Leroy knew they had found the love of their life when they were just kids during the Depression in Alvarado and Grandview, Texas. They married at 17 and 19 and moved with her family to New Mexico. Together they learned the trading post business and Indian Arts and culture. Leroy spoke fluent Navajo. Wilmerine worked by his side, bore four children and adopted Leroy Dayea, a Navajo child. They moved to Tucson in the 50’s and ran Indian art stores. They are together again. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p. On Monday, February 10, 1997 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Interment will follow at East Lawn Palms Cemetery. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to a charity of choice. ATKINSON, Leroy Bozo’, 78, b. 1915-d 1994; a resident of Albuquerque, NM, died Saturday, September 24, 1994. He was born November 15, 1915 on his father’s farm near Grandview, Texas. Leroy was a high school football star when he met Wilmerine Bollin. They were married in 1935. Leroy and Wilmerine started out in Gallup, NM where he began to learn the business of trading with the Navajo Indians. After working for other Indian traders he determined it was time to go into business for himself. Box Canyon Trading Post was the beginning of a career that lasted 47 years. An interview and photo was placed in the Route 66 Book noting Leroy for the quality and finish of the Navajo jewelry he had produced. He was interviewed in Life Magazine and the New Mexico Magazine. Leroy was a member of the AIAA Elks. He was highly respected for his abilities, integrity and his willingness to always help others. Leroy loved to chew on large cigars, but to his friends amazement the cigar was never lit. His counsel, love, caring and generosity will always be remembered by those fortunate enough to have known him. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Wilmerine Atkinson of Albuquerque; daughter, Tyler Atkinson of Santa Fe; sons, Joe (Jeanelle) Atkinson of Durango, CO and Lynn (Donna) Atkinson of Tucson; adopted son, Leroy Dayea b. Dayea, Spouse of Gallup, NM; grandchildren, Suzanna Bennett Dayea, Eric and Jona Bonecutter, Josh, Shauna, Tracey, Erin, Katie and Kerri Atkinson; one great-grandchild; brother, Herman Atkinson of Scottsdale, AZ; sister, Anna Mae Panos of Tucson. Funeral Service 2:00 p. Thursday, September 29 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Jon Lerley officiating, with interment to follow at TMP, East Lawn. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc. Box 13423, Tucson, AZ 85705 The Box Canyon Trading Post was one mile east of the state line in New Mexico. It was built by Leroy Atkinson in 1943 and he ran it for a decade until US Highway 66 was widened, which impacted the commercial viability of the property. The building itself seems fairly modern with big plate glass windows along the front, the requisite Indian drawings, and even the gas pumps seem fairly modern too. But the maroon Chevron gasoline style sign and the streamlined automobile seem to indicate the decade of the 1950s. (Petley 6961) ATKINSON, Leroy Bozo’, 78, a resident of Albuquerque, NM, died Saturday, September 24, 1994. He was born November 15, 1915 on his fathers farm near Grandview, Texas. Handmade by Navajo silversmith Andy Cadman, Andy comes from a long line of silversmiths and learned his trade from his brothers Daniel “Sunshine” Reeves, and the late great Gary Reeves. Andy Cadman makes beautiful Navajo silver works of art, implementing deep hand stamped designs that cover his entire creations. This is a sterling silver Navajo row cuff bracelet, with five natural rare and unusual Carico Lake Turquoise stones. The stones are a frosty white with pale green spots, and an amazing red/brown webbed matrix. The stones sit in smooth bezels with a hand twisted rope of silver at the base of each stone. The silver work is perfect and done in a traditional Cadman style. Cadman added beautifully cut fans and drops of silver separating the stones. Andy covered the entire bracelet with his signature deep Navajo stamp work, and finished the silver with a dark oxidation. The inner circumference of this bracelet including the 1 inch wrist opening is 6-1/2 inches. The face of the bracelet is 3/4 inch wide. The center stone measures 1/2 inch by 11/16 inch, down to 5/16 inch by 7/16 inch. Weighs 53.2 grams Andy stamped A. Cadman and Sterling on the inside of the cuff.
