First, it was created by renowned Navajo artist Gary Reeves, brother of Sunshine and Daniel Reeves. Their award-winning works collectively populate many museums, collections and publications. The turquoise cabochon in this bracelet is very unusual, in its incredible beauty, size (2 5/8″ x 1 3/8″), rarity and origin. The Godber Mine in Nevada has been known to produce some of the finest turquoise ever mined, and on very rare occasions, a gorgeous spiderweb turquoise which is what you see here. Clouds of blue in a black sea. It is easily one of the most arresting and beautiful turquoise gems we’ve seen. It’s set in a plain Sterling silver bezel ringed with silver rope. The wings of the cuff have applied Sterling najas, an interesting choice of decoration. It is t hought to have originated with the Moors, then borrowed from the Spanish, both of which believed the naja protected them from harm. Navajo for “crescent, ” it was used by the Navajo first as an ornamental design on horse bridle headstalls and as silver decorations on men? Eventually, Navajo silversmiths began incorporating the naja design into their jewelry. The najas on this bracelet contain within them what is either a cross or a sword. Considering the origins of the symbol, perhaps it’s meant to represent both. The center strand of the three-strand Sterling band is a thin silver wire bonded with silver rope on both sides. The Sterling silver plate upon which the cab is mounted is signed on the back with the artist’s signature, G. Reeves, and stamped Sterling. This museum-quality bracelet is a perfect example of the artistry for which Gary Reeves is famous, from the choice of rare turquoise to the excellent design he created as a showcase.
