SUPER RARE TOM POLACCA HOPI NATIVE AMERICAN POTTERY INCISED SEED POT w TURQUOISE
This older piece is fabulous larger Seed Pot made by the outstanding artisan Tom Polacca. Of the Hopi Pueblo of. These ” Museum Quality” pieces by him are so scarce, much desired, highly collectible, and this one is just. Terrific as it may be one of a kind. This carved Seed Pot shows the classic style developed but Tom over the years. But as an innovator in pottery design, this piece comes with an almost Turquoise Necklace design and turquoise Feather Seeds around the top circle. Great classic Hopi Geometric designs with stacking arrows and traditional Hopi Geometric Symbols… It is 4.5″ tall and 6.5″ across in diameter. Its the only pot of his that I have found in what research I have done, that offers his Turquoise Inlay on a pot, to the public. Its a rare piece indeed. It is in perfect condition with no chips cracks repairs or damage. The piece is Carved signed Tom Polacca in his classic ” Signature Series” coined phrase, due to the carved name vs the painted name on the bottom of pots. Supposedly, only the carved name pieces were the ” Museum Quality ” pieces he put out according to documented statements by Tom. The piece is also dated 1990. There were a couple available at the high-end shops in Santa Fe. One larger piece at 3300.00, and the others, mostly jars, at 1600.00 – 2500.00. None with Turquoise and no other seed pots. Its a scarce sweet piece and if you want a one of a kind piece from a historic pottery Artisan, this is it, great addition to any collection! Any questions PLEASE ask! Tom Polacca is the son of Fannie Nampeyo, and grandson of famed Hopi potter, Nampeyo. Tom has been producing pottery since 1955 and has become a Master Potter on his own, much like his Mother and Grandmother. Tom’s innovative self developed style is reflected in his relief designs. He, like his grandmother, has developed a new approach to Hopi pottery. He has skillfully blended traditional elements with a contemporary style. He formed pottery in the traditional coil method. The basic vessel was slipped in an apparent rag-wiped light tan slip revealing various shades of the color. The design was carved into the clay using a variety of techniquesdeep carving for the outlines, shallow carving for details, and incising for highlights. He then used basic vegetable and mineral paints in rust, brown and tan colors as his palette. Once in a while a piece is produced that is special to Tom. These pieces he calls his “museum quality” pieces, and they are distinguishable from the others because on these, and only on these , he will engrave his signature into the bottom. You might even say these are. This is one of those. Every detail has been elaborately etched into the pottery surface. He has meticulously made sure that nothing was overlooked, from the delicately ribbed feathers style around the rim, to those around the base. Tom had recently taken his designs to a new level with additional depth and color. The designs come alive and seem to leap right from the pottery surface. Tom worked hard developing the process that made him famous – one source even referring to Tom as the patriarch of Hopi Pottery. Tom has been featured in many books and magazines which focus primarily on elite Indian arts. He is mentioned in several prominent works on Hopi pottery, including. Hopi-Tewa Pottery: 500 Artist Biographies. The Art of the Hopi. By Jerry and Lois Jacka. Fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery. By Rick Dillingham, and many others. Thomas received wide acclaim for his pottery over the years and his work is in numerous museums such as the Heard, the Denver Art Museum and others. This one still retains the original 1200.00 price sticker from when the family bought the piece from her many years ago. This piece is a great size Olla type jar or pot from the famous Martha Appleleaf of San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico. These Knife Wing Geometric pots are a specialty of hers, much desired, highly collectible, and this one is just. The pot stands 5″ tall and is approx 6.5″ across at the widest. It is in perfect condition with no chips cracks repairs or damage, showing only slight if any signs of wear or minimal scratching due to its age. Its a sweet piece and a great addition to any collection! Any questions PLEASE ask! Born in San Ildefonso Pueblo on November 3, 1950, Martha Appleleaf is the daughter of Carmelita Dunlap (a niece of Maria Martinez) and sister of Carlos Dunlap. Martha learned the art of making pottery from her mother, who won an unprecedented 20 First Place Ribbons at the Santa Fe Indian Market. Carmelita’s mother died when Carmelita was very young and she was raised by her aunts Desideria Montoya and Maria Martinez. They immersed her in the world of pottery making, teaching her everything they knew. The family members worked together in producing their unique pottery art. They share labour, as well as the technique involved in gathering and preparing the clay, building, sanding, polishing, painting, and firing. Carmelita was considered Maria’s last direct protege until she died in 2000. Martha Appleleaf grew up making pottery with her mother and her siblings. She still makes pottery with her siblings and has also passed the art on to her son, Erik Fender. Super Rare Big Joseph Latome San Felipe Zuni Pueblos Native American Pottery Jar
This older piece is a large Olla style jar or Pot made by the outstanding artisan Joseph Latome of the San Felipe & Zuni Pueblos here in. These pieces by him are so scarce, much desired, highly collectible, and this one is just. There were not that many good San Felipe Potters around and the newer ones kinda had to figure it out on their own as not much documented pottery from there survived. This amazing piece stands 6.75″ tall and is approx 11.5″ across at the widest. It is in perfect condition with no chips cracks repairs or damage, with only a couple tiny spots of finish loss and showing barely any normal signs of wear or scratching due to its older age. May even be what the Estate owners paid for it. The estate sale people did put a piece of tape across the bottom with a price tag under it, and as you can see in the last photo, did bring a little finish off the bottom of the pot when removed, so it was re-attached. Thankfully its on the bottom. Its still an amazingly rare item, only 2 on line anywhere available including the high-end shops in Santa Fe. One larger piece at 3500.00, and the other, very similar, at 1600.00. Its a sweet piece and a great addition to any collection! Any questions PLEASE ask! Joseph Latoma is a young man who lives at San Felipe Pueblo. His dad is from Zuni Pueblothus the reason for his Zuni namebut his mom is Margaret Chavez of San Felipe Pueblothus his matriarchal link to San Felipe Pueblo. Because there is so little documented historic pottery from San Felipe, Latoma has had to create his designs from memories of the older generation of the pueblo. He is very interested in reintroducing traditional San Felipe pottery. The only older potter from there in the last 50 years was Candelaria Montana and she passed away about 20 years ago. This large olla was made in the traditional pueblo coil method and slipped with natural regional clay. The designs are a combination of geometric, avian, flora and celestial, all arranged in a most artistic and logical manner.
