It features more than 40 full-page engravings. Of the Indians of America, the Preface states. This remarkable people, it is our purpose in the following volume to describe. We shall make the reader acquainted with their mode of living, habits, occupations, and pursuits, and relate many incidents of their history. We shall commence with notices of the early discoveries and conquests of the Spaniards, Portuguese, English, and French adventurers, who formed settlements on different parts of the continent, and on the islands of the West Indies. Our young readers will thus understand how it happened that the whole continent, with the exception of certain wild regions in the interior, has been wrested from the possession of the aboriginal inhabitants, and converted into settlements inhabited by Europeans and their descendants, while the Indians of America have been driven into the woods and deserts, and whole nations and tribes of them utterly exterminated.
