VINTAGE RARE NATIVE AMERICAN HANDMADE BEAUTIFUL BEADED RED WOOL FELT LEGGINGS WITH ERMINE TAILS & FEATHERED TIN CONES THERE IS A LEATHER TAG INSIDE THE LEGGINGS WHICH SAYS: “MADE BY BOB ELKHORN; BLACKFOOT TRIBE; SIKSIKA; MONTANA; 1957″ LEGGINGS ARE CLEAN AND LOOK NEW LIKE THEY WERE NEVER WORN. TWO BEADED LOOM STRIPS; EACH IS 27″ LONG x 2 1/8″ WIDE DOWN EACH LEG TOTAL OF 31 ERMINE TAILS (1 MISSING ON ONE SIDE); ERMINE TAILS ARE 6-8″ LONG (2 TAILS ARE MISSING THE BLACK TIPS) WHEN LYING FLAT: EACH LEGGING IS 34″ LONG x 15 1/2″ WIDE AT TOP AND 13 5/8″ WIDE AT BOTTOM. THERE IS A MORE NARROW MEASUREMENT WHERE THE LEG GOES INTO THE LEGGING: WHEN LYING FLAT, THE LEG WIDTH AT THE TOP IS 11″ AND 8″ AT THE BOTTOM; LEG CIRCUMFERENCE WOULD BE 22″ AT THE TOP AND 16″ AT THE BOTTOM. This unique pair of a young boys rawhide leggings is probably Sioux and appears to be from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century. Measurements for each leg are about 22 in total length, from the rawhide ties with metal buckle at the top, to the beaded cuffs below; about 12 in seamed closure from middle of each legging to the cuff; and about 12 in leg opening. Colored seed beads of white, dark blue, medium blue, black, golden brown, red, and orange form bold, geometric patterns that decorate the front of the leggings and the cuffs. Rows of domed brass buttons and tassels of larger white and blue beads accent the front design. Minor wear issues, consistent with age and original use, include: minor losses of beads on edges of cuffs; a few loose threads at tops of beaded, front panels; a few, almost imperceptible spots; a hole at the top of the right legging; and one early, hand-stitched repair, about 1¾ in length, above the panel on right leg. These minor issues can be repaired and, overall, this pair of leggings is in very good antique condition. No restorations or modifications have been made. Gifted from a private collection and then stored for many years; clean and no odors. This pair of childs leggings is a rare example of both function and artistry in Native American culture!
