He won numerous awards and his work is published in well-known books of Indian jewelry. Authentic Native American Adena point. This piece was found in Henry Co. Hornstone with some of the outer cortex on the base and the tip. Has a couple minor nicks as shown in the photo’s. It measures just shy of 5 3/4 long and 3 inches wide. Will make a nice center piece for any collection. This is a large and rare point. This will probably be just this one time listing. Parallel with a spike published in “American Indian Tomahawks, “. Peterson (#74) see photo of plate. Description: Symetrically flaring blade. The eye is a pointed elipse. The ears are symetrical. Note: I do not know if this listed example was found in Connecticut. Further details: The surface of the metal is nicely patinated with minimal. Several wear marks do occur in the surface of the metal. There is no re-sharpening of the bit. The edge has one or two spots of. Roughness which does not distract from its appearance. The poll is octagonally chamfered. The haft is very old. The tightening shims in the eye reflect great age. I do not know. How far back the haft goes, but it could be original. There are three very small holes. In the haft which. Appear to have been drilled in modern. Times to use for attaching something. A prior owner fancied it up with a beaded drop, but that it was removed. I’ve had it in my collection. For years and don’t know. MEASURES: bottom of haft to top of bit: 12 3/4 inches. End of poll to edge of bit: 5 inches. Bit: 3 1/8 inches. Poll: 1 3/8 inches. The distinction between a “poll hatchet” and a poll tomahawk is often a matter of debate. I have nothing against poll hatchets and have a fine example of one currently listed. But here’s what makes this a tomahawk, and primarily a weapon of Native Americans. (not British or French soldiers). The military French and British Tomahawk styles. Are pretty well known because they were made in large numbers. This is not like any of theirs. Which had shorter polls, more efficient for hammering nails, and tended to have their top. Edge form a straight line front to back, for ease in lathing strips of wood. This museum quality piece contains 18 outstanding very rare Old Kingman turquoise stones. Surrounding the stones are impeccable silver fans with accenting raindrops. The necklace consists of 12 fabulous silver squashes. The beautiful matching silver naja pendant measures around 3-1/2″ X 3″ and the largest turquoise stone which is located on the naja measures around 3/4″ X 3/8″. Resting throughout the entire necklace are marvelous round silver beads with old natural patina and a traditional silver clasp. What makes this necklace so incredible is that those Old Kingman stones came from the old deposit not the new which is very rare. Authentic Rare Chumash Incised Asymmetrical Spindle Charmstone. Artifact Classification: An Asymmetrical Spindle Charm Stone, from the Chumash culture in Southern California. One end displays multiple grooves comprising of incised lines, that are not joined. The material is a black polished hard stone with earthen patina. This artifact has been in private collections since the eraly 1900’s. There are incised lines on one end of the charmstone which is interpreted as symbolizing lightning. This type of charmstone was said to be a thunderbolt and was usually found at the foot of a tree that had been struck by lightning (see appraisal description photo provided). The Chumash of Southern California would also use charmstones for shamanistic purposes in ceremonial context. Valuation Guarantee Line: Southern California Chumash Culture, Classification: Incised Asymmetrical Spindle Charmstone; Date Estimate 1300 AD-1500 AD. Size: 6-1/4 inch x 1 inch (measurements taken from longest and widest part of the artifact). Archaeological Charmstone Reference: Elsasser and Rhode, 1992. Provenance: Gallery acquisition, Ex. Britten Marin Collection, California. Britten Marin was the son of John Marin (original founder of Sports Illustrated Magazine). John Marin passed away May 31, 2011.
