Item: The Marc Rudick Native American Basketry Archive (Two Volume Set) Provenance: From the private research library of Marc Rudick, featuring unique association materials. Overview: This listing offers a rare opportunity to acquire a curated “mini-archive” from the library of noted collector/dealer Marc Rudick. These two volumes represent a unique intersection of expertise, documented through personal correspondence and inscriptions from legendary figures in the Southwest art world. Book 1: The Fine Art of California Indian Basketry (1996) by Brian BibbyThe Inscription: Features a warm, handwritten personal inscription on the front flyleaf from Terry DeWald (premier authority on Southwest art and author) to Marc Rudick and his wife. Included Correspondence: Tucked inside is an original handwritten/typed letter from Terry DeWald to Marc Rudick. This unique document provides a rare “behind-the-scenes” look into the 1990s art market, discussing gallery matters and industry insights. Book 2: Basketry of the San Carlos Apache (1985) by Helen H. Personal Touch: The receipt features a handwritten note from the bookseller stating, “We enjoyed eBaying with you, ” providing a wonderful piece of ephemera that anchors the book’s history within the Rudick collection. Condition: Both volumes are in good to very good condition. Bindings are tight and pages are clean. The Bibby book does have a little edge wear on the corners of paperback book. All ephemera (letter and receipt) are included and remain tucked within their respective volumes as originally found. Why This Archive Matters: In the world of high-end ethnographic art, provenance is the ultimate value-driver. This set offers a documented trail of ownership and professional friendship between Marc Rudick and Terry DeWald.

Rare Vintage Navajo Native American Pitched Basketry Water Container c Mid 1900s
Rare Vintage Navajo Native American Indian Pitched (Pitch-Coated) Coiled Basketry Water Container/ Bottle, with Horsehair Handles, Circa Mid-1900’s. A rare find in Native American basketry, this pitch-coated coiled basketry water container is attributed to the Navajo based on the braided rim finish. The red ochre-tinted pitch coating is applied on both the inside and outside surfaces. Water bottles made with coiling on a wooden rod foundation and horsehair handles occur in a number of Southwest tribes including the Navajo, as well as some of the Apache groups and Great Basin tribes making attribution difficult, but the distinctive rim finish on this piece appears to be the clincher. In this example, the thick pitch coating is worn enough to see the structure of the basket. The basket is structurally intact and the white horsehair handles are strong and unbroken. Dimensions: 5-3/4″ tall, 5-1/2″ maximum diameter/ wide, Top opening: 2-1/2″ diameter, Base: 4″ diameter. The woven elements including the braided rim finish and the horsehair handles are intact. The pitch coating is worn and crackled in some areas as seen in the photos.

Rare California Pomo Indian Feather Basket Native American Miniature Basketry 1
Offered is our First Native American Miniature this week. This is a rare Pomo Indian Feather Basket, dating to the 2nd quarter 20th Century. It measures 1 3/8″ across and 1/2″ tall. Very good to excellent vintage condition but it has one small area with some feather loss. This little basket came from a private collection. Most of the items we sell come from our personal collection gathered over the years from our travels, from Native powwows and craft stores, antique shops, auctions and estate sales. Now that our kids are in college and beyond, we are letting some items go so others can enjoy them. Then I’ll send you a combined invoice. Sorry for the expense, but I’ve had items lost overseas when mailing first class and don’t want to take the risk of losing items. I pack carefully and try to reuse materials to save on environmental impact. I often double-box items with smaller gift boxes collected from various thrift stores. I reuse all that I receive and hope you will make use of the ones that come in your packages.
