For sale is a rare circa 1875 tintype of. Caucasian man in traditional Penobscot festival garb. Provenance: Found in Midcoast Maine. Its very rare to find an image like this. It is unknown if the subject was a caucasian man adopted into the tribe or possibly a man of intermarriage between the French. Or just a man donning the garb for a photo shoot. The clothing fits him well suggesting it was his personal clothing. The Penobscot and French intermarried beginning in the late 18th through the 19th century as their population were devastated from war and disease. The tintype features an early and detailed full-length studio portrait of a young Caucasian man sporting the full panoply of Penobscot festival costume, including headdress, decorated blouse with shawl collar, sash, trousers, pipe bag; he is standing on a broadloom carpet with a plain canvas backdrop. No case but with its original gold foil liner. Retaining its original glass. Condition haloed, otherwise fine. Measurements: 4 1/8 x 3 1/4.
