This is an Estate Fresh old RARE NATIVE AMERICAN POTTERY TURKEY FIGURE or SEED POT in GREAT COLORS. It is SIGNED DOLORES with the last name worn too far to discern though it could be Toya or Garcia or possibly Fragua. That is followed by a word that looks like it could be Jemez but its too worn to be definitive – its OLD and WORN in my opinion so you decide what it reads. They had some very colorful stuff back in the day and the Jemez Pueblo is known for using Poster Paint on its older pottery for decoration. This came from an old long time collection and she had amazing pottery and other stuff. The Bird is 4″ tall x 3.25″ wide and 3.75 deep. Any questions PLEASE ask! ACOMA POTTERY NEW MEXICO. HAND PAINTED TURKEY, SIGNED. Lucy Martin Lewis (1890 or 1898-March 12, 1992) was a Native American potter from Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico. She is known for her decorative pottery made using traditional techniques. Next to Maria Martinez. Of San Ildefonso Pueblo, Lucy was one of the most famous Southwest potters. She started making pottery at the age of eight, learning the traditional methods from her great aunt, Helice Vallo. Lucy’s pottery is formed by hand, using coils of gray clay. After a pot is shaped and dried, she would apply a white slip. Without the slip the mineral paints wouldn’t stick to the pot. Then the design was applied using mineral paints and a brush made from the chewed ends of a yucca leaf. On a day when the weather was right, she would fire a small number of finished pieces. Results were rarely 100% with some pieces ending up cracked and the background on others would be gray instead of white (which could sometimes be fixed by refiring), but a few would come out wonderful. Her designs were inspired by potsherds from the prehistoric Anasazi and Mimbres cultures found on Acoma Pueblo property. Her designs included star patterns, flowers, parrots, rainbows, lightning patterns and the “deer-with-heart-line” design of the Zuni (which they gave her explicit permission to use). Her decorations were often colorful, consisting of black, brown, yellow and orange designs on a polished white slip. Lucy never learned to speak English. She began her career in the 1920s and was well-known by the 1940s. She started signing her pots around 1950, about the time she started entering them in competitions. Her work immediately earned several First Prize awards and over the years she regularly earned blue ribbons and certificates. In 1983 she received the Governor of New Mexico’s award for Outstanding Personal Contribution to the Art of the State. She was also given the Woman of Achievement award from Northwood Institute in Houston, Texas. In the last year of her life Lucy was awarded the Gold Medal from the American Craft Council and the College Art Association gave her their Gold Medal. Her final art show was the 1991 Santa Fe Indian Market. She made pottery almost until the day she died.
This is a Rare & Fantastic Estate Fresh older Gouache painting from a long time collector of fine Southwest Artwork. This piece was done and signed by the Artist. This piece is scarce because pieces by Susi are not commonly found so they are highly prized because of the quality and the almost Folk Art style of work as well as scarcity. It is an original Watercolor or Gouache work of art in Mixed Media as I believe there is grease Pen or Pencil and maybe a little pastel too. It depicts a Coyote with Bulls Horns in a Native American type vest with 2 American Flags. The piece is literally covered in Birds. There is an an Eagle as well as Ducks Cardinals Dove Swifts Blue or Desert Jay Humming Birds Red Wing Blackbirds a couple I do not know as well as 4 Turkey along the ground. It is artist signed and dated’99. The painting is in its original hand made and hand painted frame under Plexiglass & matted perfectly. I believe the frame to be Custom made by her husband Richard. It is a privilege to offer this beauty. Framed this piece is 24.5″ wide by 31.25″ tall. Any questions PLEASE ask! This was Jack’s first print in the Living with the land – Eastern Indian Series. The print is hand signed and numbered by well known PA wildlife artist Jack Paluh from Waterford Pennsylvania. This print is number 234 of 950. The print is in excellent condition and comes double matted in a nice hardwood frame under glass. The frame roughly measures 30.5 inches (H) x 39.5 inches (W). Also in the frame is a signed and dated sketch by Jack, a turkey feather, and an engraved gold plate with the print’s title Native Hunters. On the back of the frame in sleeves are the description of the print along with the certificate of authenticity. What you see in the pictures is exactly what you get.
