RARE AND BEAUTIFUL NATIVE AMERICAN HANDKERCHIEF BASKET. 1ST QUARTER 20TH CENTURY. About 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ x 2 1/2. Wonderful sweetgrass and ash splint handkerchief basket. Passamaquoddy or Penobscot / Wabanaki origin. Lid with ring pull. Shows the original vegetable dye polychrome colors inside and on the bottom. Fancy baskets are more delicate than the utilitarian baskets made for carrying goods. This design dates to the Victorian era, when ladies brought their handkerchiefs in their trunks to their summer residences or hotels. No broken or missing strands. Great colors (all visible in the images). A LOVELY EASTERN WOODLANDS NATIVE AMERICAN BARREL BASKET IN GREAT CONDITION.
