This box appears to be constructed from small silver plates. The box’s overall characteristics (see photos) indicate an early period of Navajo silversmithing, especially the influence of the box’s shape and its opening and closing mechanism. The stamps that were used on top of the box appear to be hand made. The box measures approximately 1″x 3/4″and is 5/8 tall. Slightly hefty for it’s size, the box weighs approximately 15 grams. This mysterious piece looks to possibly be designed to be a sweater guard or perhaps a shawl guard? The two bear pieces would fit through a large button hole on either side and hold a sweater or shawl closed. The large silver “buttons” at each end could also be sewn onto a piece. The turquoise inlay on the two buttons has been beautifully done. The sterling silver “buttons” measure 1 3/4 across and are nicely shaped and curved. The silver links to the chain are 3/4 across. Solid Silver Cuff Bracelet and Ring, hand hammered with detailed carvings on bands & 6 sun markings on bracelet and on the side of the ring. Beading surrounds the agate stones. Bracelet measures 2 5/8″ at the widest point and 2″ long. The agate stone measures 1 5/8″ x 1 1/8″. The six bracelet bands measure 2 1/4″ long and are 1/4″ wide. The photo shows the size of the Cuff on a 6 wrist, daylight can be seen on the open sides. The ring measures 1 1/8″ L x 5/8″ wide. This set is from the 1930s and the colors of the moss agate are rare. Brilliant corals, blues and wispy black markings that look like trees, leaves and sunset scenes. Due to age and origin the items are not marked and the purity of the silver is commensurate with its origination. The items were dealer tested to be solid silver and the bracelet is very heavy. Dealer valuation (verbal) was 80-100 for the ring and 400-700 for the cuff. There are a couple of very tiny scratches on the bracelet that can barely be seen in the photos. However, in consideration of the age, type of creation these are not significant detractors of value. Price is set low. These have been family owned for 80 years.
Lawrence and Griselda Saufkie were important to the growth of Hopi American Indian Overlay jewelry. They traveled the world talking about Hopi and Hopi Jewelry. It was Lawrence’s father, Paul Saufkie and Fred Kaboutie, who began this new (new in the 1930’s) jewelry style and taught it to Hopi Silversmiths and GI’s returning after WWII. Lawrence was a major proponent of Hopi Overlay, an extraordinary silversmith and a mentor to many of today’s top silversmiths. Lawrence was designated an Arizona Living Treasure in 2002. This buckle has been beautifully crafted by master Hopi silversmiths Lawrence and Griselda Saufkie. It shows a Parrot bird and kiva steps within a Hopi bird wing design. This buckle shows wonderful detail. The buckle measures 2 7/8″ across x 1 1/8″ tall and weighs 36.5 grams. The loop at the back will fit a belt up to 1 wide. It is hallmarked with Griselda’s snowflake hallmark and Lawrence’s bear hallmark. This buckle is in great vintage condition.
