Antique AMERICAN INDIAN WARS 1902 Sioux Apache Kiowa Ute Comanche RARE PHOTOS
Note: Many of my clients are scholars and researchers seeking specific information related to their field of interest. For their convenience I include the following details directly from this book. Including Fantastic War Dances, Mysterious Medicine Men, Desperate Indian Braves, Tortures of Prisoners; Daring Deeds; Adventures of the Chase, Etc. Superbly Illustrated with Phototype and Wood Engravings. By Ella Hines Stratton. Published in 1902 (no publisher cited). 10 x 7 cloth hardcover with front pastedown illustration. Illustrated with color frontispiece, monochromatic half-tone photos (blue like cyanotype, red, black and white), along with text illustrations and one other color page. Exterior as shown in photo with some surface wear on front board, also some nicking and fraying of cloth on spine, edgewear, rubbing at corners. Binding is still pretty good, hinges unbroken, text block secure. One or two illustrated pages near the middle have roughened edges and a bit of soiling but remain intact. Text is complete and generally clean aside from occasional finger smudges. Occasional small edge tears in the margins, nothing serious. Otherwise no torn, loose or missing pages. Gift inscription on first endpaper. Good surviving example of this rare American Indian title from the turn of the century. This is a rare and beautiful book about Native American history, focused largely on famous Indian leaders and conflicts with Europeans/white settlers during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. It was probably written for a younger audience (the text is presented as an ongoing dialogue) yet it presents a great deal of information and contains more than a hundred antique photos and illustrations of American Indians and scenes related to their history. Certainly a wonderful 118-year-old title and collectible, a great introduction to some of Americas greatest true Indian stories. In order to give you the most accurate description of this rare and fascinating book, I have provided some helpful details below, starting with a detailed summary of the contents, followed by an equally thorough summary of the books hundred-plus photos and illustrations. Further down this page, you can see some of these historic images for yourself. Due to the historical significance of this work and its valuable Native American portraiture, I took the liberty of including more than the usual complement of pictures. It may take an extra few seconds to load, but well worth it. I hope youll take a few moments to have a look. Rare Signed Diane O'Leary Native American Comanche Irish QUAIL Serigraph Print
A rare large serigraph print by Native American artist Diane O’Leary. Half Irish & half Comanche. Signed in graphite in lower right corner. Printed on medium stock paper. No flaws on paper. She attended Texas Christian University, Bacone College, Harvard and Stanford, but never took a course in art. Her graduate degrees are in Southwestern archeology and in Baroque Literature (music). O’Leary started her artistic career in early in the 1960’s, studying with Eric Gibbard and Georgia O’Keefe. Today her paintings are in most of the public and private collections of American Indian art. Public collections including Diane O’Leary’s work are: Berne Museum in Berne, Switzerland; the Denver Art Museum in Colorado; the Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York; the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona; the Museum of American Indian, Heye Foundation in New York; the Mitchell Indian Museum at Kendall College in Evanston, Illinois; the Millicent Rogers Foundation Museum in Taos. New Mexico; the Philbrook Art Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma; the Peabody Museum at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Stanford University in California and the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In recent years O’Leary had largely focused on making quilts which at times relate well to her style of painting. At other times they are largely abstract–but all are hand stitched with care and a fabulous sense of design. Loon Quilt produced in 1996 is featured on page 90 of a fine publication. To Honor and Comfort Native Quilting Traditions. The Living Waters of Tillamook Bay. Is a series of collages by Diane OLeary, reflecting the biodiversity of the flora and fauna of the estuarine environment of Tillamook Bay, Oregon. Tillamook Bay is located on the northern Oregon coast and is a unique habitat among Pacific coast bays, because it is fed by five rivers located within the watershed. By Spring 2008 she completed 124 collages referencing this theme. These traveled to bring this environmental reality to the attention of many.
